It was called the War to End All Wars, The Great War and the World War. Sparked by the assassination of heir to the Austrian-Hungary throne, Arch Duke Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip. This increased tensions between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, which, in the coming weeks led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia.
Unsurprisingly, each side then called in favors to their political and economical allies. Which created a global chess match between what became the Allies: United Kingdom, France and the Russian Empire, Japan and the United States; and the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire. The war officially began on July 28, 1914 and lasted until November 11, 1918. Involving over 60 million Europeans, costing millions of lives and drawing all parts of the world into the conflict in one form or another. The Russian Empire ceased to exist at the end of the war as well as many European and Asian boundaries being redefined.
It was the most costly war at the time, not just financially but in terms of human life. World War I was the advent of modern warfare and introduced grenades, machine guns, flame throwers, weaponized gas, mortars and shells and tanks. Troops on both sides lived in the muck of the trenches. Battered by shells and cold rain as they huddled for sheltered amongst the bodies of their rotting comrades. A muddy, cold Hell on Earth.
It was called the War to end all wars but, unfortunately, that was not the case. Less then two decades later the world would once again witness another war, one which would completely change the world entirely and affect us to this very day.
